Advice From Your Local Home Inspector on How to Prevent Bathroom Mildew
Bathroom mildew is often caused by excess moisture. Most of the time, when people think of moisture in the bathroom, they are mostly thinking about mopping up if the shower door is left open or when someone steps out of the shower.
Today some bathrooms have more moisture issues than others because there are now have fitted shower heads and jets that create more steam than in the past. Also steam showers have become more common. Steam showers create more moisture in the bathroom and the moisture needs somewhere to go.
Many materials used in the bathroom can withstand water on the surface. However, some can fall victim to moisture damage if it finds its way under the surface.
Proper Ventilation is Key
Mildew is often caused by moisture building up due to the lack of proper ventilation. It is very important to keep your bathroom properly ventilated to prevent the build up of moisture.
Windows can be of some help, however most bathroom windows are not large enough to complete the job. Also, in the winter you may not want to have a window open when its freezing outside.
Most bathrooms have fans. Please remember to keep this on while taking a shower because it will prevent the build up of moisture. If you do not have a exhaust fan, think about installing one. An exhaust fan will move the air around to dry it out.
Another thing you can do, is if you have low energy light bulbs try leaving them on for 10 to 15 minutes after showering.
When buying paint make sure it is made for a bathroom or kitchen. If you're not sure ask a professional at your local paint store.
Lastly, try to keep the area as clean as possible. Spray bathroom tiles with vinegar or or store bought cleaner. Mop up standing water as quick as possible.
